Just Saying Hi - Death Note/Torchwood crossover
Yeah, another Death Note fic. I actually wrote this over a week ago, but I've been debating whether to post it because it's kind of... just an excuse to get two characters in the same room. There's not much plot behind it. Well, there's an implied plot, but I'm not sure why Torchwood would be in Japan or [spoiler] would be in Wales. (I am still working on Mount Fraught Syndrome, promise.)

Just Saying Hi

“So we’re assuming tha-”

Somebody screamed, high and piercing and long, the kind of scream you never wanted to hear in your life. Ianto had heard at least five, and he didn’t even pause to finish his sentence before turning and dashing back into the other room, Gwen just behind him. “Oh Christ,” he heard her mutter, “don’t tell me she’s having a bloody heart attack…”

Ianto scanned the room for monsters, on general principles. The only new thing he could see in it was Jack, standing in the doorway looking bewildered and still wearing his coat. Tosh and Owen were crouched on the floor beside the woman they were meant to be interviewing, who… it was either a heart attack or some sort of seizure, Ianto thought, dizzily. She was thrashing at the air, shrieking, and Ianto's Japanese wasn't great at the best of times but whatever she was saying didn’t sound coherent in the slightest.

“What happened?” Gwen yelled. “Owen, please don’t tell me she…”

“It’s not a heart attack.” Owen looked up, wiping his forehead. “I don’t know, she just screamed as if she’d seen something horrible and then collapsed. She’s hysterical. I’ve been trying to give her something to – aagh!” he yelped, as one of the young woman’s flailing arms hit him hard across the face.

“Seen something?” Gwen reached for her gun, then realised she didn’t have it. They weren’t supposed to have needed weapons for this bit. “Like what?”

“Well I don’t bloody know, do I?” Owen snapped. “Tosh, translation might be helpful…”

“Um, she’s saying…” Tosh ran a hand through her hair, uncharacteristically disorientated. “‘It’s too much, it’s too many… the numbers, the numbers… I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Misa-Misa’s sorry.’ That’s all I can make out. She’s…”

The woman screamed again, hands groping at her face, and Tosh grabbed her wrists and yanked her arms down. “Amane-san! Oh shit… Owen, she just tried to claw her eyes out!”

“Yeah, I noticed! Hold her still!” Owen pulled a syringe full of something blue out of his kit and jabbed it into the young woman’s arm. She stiffened for a moment, straining in Tosh’s grip, then flopped to the carpet, eyes glazed, breathing heavily.

Nobody spoke for a while. Ianto looked at Jack, who hadn’t moved this whole time, and gulped. “Didn’t any of you see anything?”

“Hey, I only just…” Jack began, and then Amane sat up and lunged at him. Tosh and Owen grabbed her arms again and tried to drag her back, but she wriggled out of their grasp and hit Jack across the face, shouting – well, Ianto didn’t know, obviously, but whatever it was made Jack go pale and take a step back. “What…?” he said, and then Amane’s eyes rolled back in her head and she fell to the floor again, Owen’s sedative presumably having kicked in.

“…Tosh?” Gwen asked.

“She said…” Tosh looked at Jack, fear growing in her eyes. “Jack, she said, ‘What are you?’”

Everyone stared at Jack. He shook his head, slowly, looking down at the unconscious woman. “All I did was walk through the door,” he said. He shrugged, attempting a flash of his normal grin. “I swear – I was just saying hi…”
